Suspension Fault — Normal Height Only

Owning a Land Rover with Air Suspension is a smooth and comfortable ride until this Suspension Fault message appears. Don’t panic! This message does mean the electronic air suspension has stored a suspension fault but you can still drive normally on the freeway and surface streets. You will notice the air suspension fault light as well. This lamp is amber in color.

Recommendation for Suspension Fault Messages

Here at British Autoworks, we recommend any owner with a suspension fault message to do a few things before disregarding this message. First thing is listen for any abnormal noises. Air leaks can sometimes be heard from air springs and poor air line connections at the air suspension compressor. Air leaks noises are not normal unless the suspension is lowering from height changes. Second recommendation is a visual inspection. Leaking air springs will not support the weight of your Land Rover correctly causing a leaning condition. For example, an Air Spring in the right front of an LR3 is leaking air and does not support the weight in the front. The LR3 will look like it is lower in the right front compared to the left front. You may also notice the left rear height is now higher then the right rear height.

Electrical problems can cause Suspension Fault Messages

After performing audible and visual inspections, you may not find anything abnormal with your Land Rover Suspension. If your suspension fault message does say “Normal Height Only”, you most likely can drive to a local service station without any additional damage to your Land Rover. British Autoworks recommends, at the very least, a fault code retrieval of your suspension system. These suspension faults will guide us to problem.

Most common Suspension Fault

Most common failure within the suspension system is the air suspension compressor assembly. Since majority of the suspension system valves, sensors and components are located within the compressor assembly, this leads to common failures around 75,000 to 100,000 miles of service. A close second for common failure is the front air springs. This springs support majority of Land Rover’s weight. These springs also are made out of rubber which wears and dries out over time. Land Rover has completely redesigned the air suspension compressor assembly to improve the reliability. British Autoworks usually has a compressor in stock and we can also perform the software update to the Suspension Computer once the updated compressor is installed.

Range Rover Evoque Suspension Lift

I recently had the pleasure of installing a set of quality aftermarket suspension springs. This Range Rover Evoque suspension lift kit by H&R Springs provides a increase of about an inch & a half of ride height. Since the Evoque is similar to the LR2, this lift kit may work on an LR2. Please check with H&R springs before installation on a LR2. This definitely should be installed by a professional! Please do yourself a favor and do not try to install yourself. Coil over springs are under a great deal of pressure when mounted to a strut assembly. Use a quality strut spring compressor to remove and install these springs. Check out Branick Industries for a high quality strut spring compressor. Now that we are on the same page, I share with you some important things to consider before installation.

Perform a thorough Inspection

Now this may seem obvious. Check for worn brake components, steering tie rods, and worn control arm bushings. All of these parts of your Evoque will be removed or adjusted during the suspension lift installation. To save yourself some time, order any worn components ahead of time. Worn control arm bushings will not only add additional costs but prevent an accurate alignment. Save yourself from aligning your Range Rover Evoque more then once. Perform a brake inspection as well. The complete steering knuckles at each four corner will be removed from the vehicle. Since your brakes mount to the knuckles, replace any worn out parts at this time. Check each strut for leaks or damage before starting this job! You will have each strut removed. Replace any high mileaged and leaking struts.

Use a High Quality Strut Spring Compressor

As mentioned earlier, invest in a strut spring compressor. A Range Rover Evoque suspension lift is not the only job you will use this spring compressor on. Majority of cars made today use a coil-over shock design which means you will need a spring compressor to replace most shocks. Once the strut is removed and mounted within the spring compressor, draw an alignment line with a paint pen from the lower end of the shock, on the spring and on the upper spring mount. This way you will have the upper mount in the same position once the new spring is installed onto the shock. Remove and install your new springs onto the shocks/struts.

Complete the Job with 4 Weel Alignment

Install all strut assemblies back on your Range Rover Evoque. Double and triple check all steering joints, control arm mounts, wheel hubs, and axle nuts are fully tighten to factory specs. Correctly fit any external and interior trims removed for access. Install your wheels and perform a test drive. Pay attention for any abnormal noises & changes in the steering. Sometimes removing suspension components can cause an unexpected steering wheel alignment which common referred to as steering wheel off center when driving straight. 4 wheel alignments correct this concern. If your test drive is completed without any new noises and the steering is centered, I still recommend an alignment. This will correctly load suspension bushings for the new ride height, fine tune wheel toe-in and toe-out & prevent pulls while driving.

Check out this photo of under the hood of a 2014 Range Rover Sport. This Land Rover came in the yesterday for an oil service and brake inspection. Our client was so happy to find us because she did not want to drive the hour round to trip to the local Land Rover Dealerships. She lives really close to us in a North County San Diego community called 4S Ranch which is just west of Rancho Bernardo. Just under 45 minutes later, Our team completed the oil change plus a brake and vehicle inspection. Peter, our owner, advised her of a few concerns which are covered under warranty (free) which the local dealerships can complete.

Land Rover Range Rover Navigation Update Procedure

Today a customer called and asked if I could update the software for his LR3 Navigation. This is a easy thing to do, so I sent him an email with the instructions. Since this is a simple update, I figured I would write a post with instructions.

As you can see from the photo above, your Land Rover LR3 (and Range Rover Sport) navigation computer is located under the driver’s seat. A Range Rover has the same navigation computer but is located in the rear load space on the left hand (driver’s side). Inside the navigation computer is a DVD disc with all the map data. This DVD is produced by a company called NAVTEQ. Land Rover and NAVTEQ have teamed up to create a great website for ordering the lastest DVD for your Land Rover.

Click on the above link and pick your model Land Rover. Choose which year. Some years are DVD disc updates while others are updated via a USB drive. Unfortunately for a few unlucky owners (LR4 & RR Sport 2010 to 2011, Range Rover 2010 to 2012) a software update must be performed by the local dealership or independent with programming capabilities. The LR3 Navigation update is done via a new DVD. Order the DVD. With the new DVD in hand, move your driver seat forward and up. Look under the seat and you will see the navigation computer shown in the photo. Slide the button to unlock, eject the old DVD. Install the new DVD and slide the button to lock and you are done.

If your vehicle requires a USB drive, I would make sure you follow each step outline in the instruction guide. I do not have a copy of the instructions to share. I recommend letting a professional perform the USB software update unless you are a fairly technical individual. Range Rover Service Required

During a recent client visit, the “Service Required” message flashed on the dash of a 2010 Range Rover HSE. I have seen this message frequently and recommend at least an oil change ASAP. Land Rover has programmed your Range Rover to flash this message for only 4 seconds at each ignition cycle. I guess you really need to pay attention or you may miss this important message. In my opinion, Land Rover could do a better job communicating of when your Range Rover Service Required message comes on and how long the message has been active.

I have read the owner’s manual and found a few very short paragraph on this topic. Check out this image.

Land Rover provides within these paragraphs short and vague service information. “The service interval message will appear when a pre-determined distance or time before service is reached.” Really. What happen to straight to the point recommended service intervals? I guess a basic time and mileage counter is too simple and boring. Land Rover has expanded service information with the Passport to Service booklet included with your owner’s manual. Let’s see if Land Rover can be provide some more clear information for your Range Rover Service Required message.

Let’s investigate. “Should the vehicle have a high proportion of short journeys or operate in severe conditions, Land Rover North America, Inc., recommends that the maintenance intervals be cut in half.” Land Rover you were doing so well with this detailed maintenance schedule until this vague statement about short journeys. What is a short journey? 2 miles of driving? Or 20 mins of bumper to bumper traffic? Help us out here. We care about our Land Rovers. Us Land Rover owners want to protect our investment. Please provide some clarification to short journeys and severe conditions. I guess us Land Rover owners could just assume we need to service our Land Rovers at 7,500 miles and not 15,000 miles. Done, very simple solution.

Range Rover SERVICE REQUIRED message MEANS SERVICE YOUR RANGE ROVER ASAP

Ok now lets go back to the “Service Required” message that flashes at start up. Our owner’s manual provides some vague paragraphs and the Passport to Service completely skips over the “Service Required” message. I did a little more research and found some more information within the Land Rover workshop manual. Within the workshop manual, I found a section called “Information and Message Center- Description and Operation”. This section outlines all technical information related to all information displayed on the instrument cluster. At the very end of this section, a few paragraphs cover the service interval indicator. I have included the information in a image below.

According to the Land Rover workshop manual for a 2010 Range Rover HSE, the “Service Required” message is displayed when your Range Rover needs service. These recommendations are made by mileage and time calculations from the Engine Control Module. Your Range Rover’s Engine Control Module monitors fuel usage to estimate engine oil wear. The biggest change over previous Range Rovers is the lack of a minus figure if service distance is exceeded. Not an issue if serviced regularly. If service distance is exceeded, you really won’t know by how far in distance or time unless you keep paper copies of your previous service invoices.

To sum up all this information, perform service when your 2010 Range Rover Service Required message is displayed (12,000 to 15,000 miles or 12 months). If you drive a regular stop and go traffic commute, perform service more frequently (between 7,500 and 10,000 miles or 6 months). Land Rover Discovery 2 Service Engine Soon Light – P0455 Fault Stored

If you have owned or currently own a Land Rover Discovery 2, I bet you have seen this warning View post light or paid your local Land Rover Shop to fix this problem. This is the amber colored “Service Engine Soon” light. This light is commonly referred to as the “Check Engine” light. Basically, this light comes on because your Land Rover Engine Computer stored a fault code related to the emissions of your Land Rover. Within your emissions control systems, the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) controls the vapors given off by the liquid gas in your fuel tank. The main automotive part in this system is the “Fuel Cap” or “Gas Cap”. This is that part we forget to tighten when we leave the gas station in a hurry.

A loose or not fully seated gas cap will turn on your service engine soon light

Since this is so common, do this simple and easy check when your “Service Engine Soon” Light comes on. Open your fuel door and double check to see if your cap is fully seated. Please refer to the photo on the top of this page. You will see an arrow pointing at the white plastic threads of your gas cap. Bend down and look at your gas cap from a lower point of view similar to this photo. Do you see any white plastic threads? If so, tighten your gas cap until these threads disappear from view. If your gas cap is tight and no threads are showing, then most likely your check engine light is on for another reason then the gas cap. You could still have an Evaportive Emission related concern.

Land Rover Discovery 2 Not Starting

I can’t stand it when my Land Rover does not start. This is such a frustrating and rare experience. Even though my Discovery starts 99.99% of the time, the one time my Disco doesn’t start is when I am at the grocery store parking lot. I just spent a few hundred dollars on food for the week and I am watching them warm up in the summer heat.

Full disclosure, I do not owner a Land Rover Discovery currently. However, I am sure you can see the frustration in this story. Generally, Land Rover Discovery’s do NOT have a known problem with starting regularly. I would even go as far to say most owners won’t experience their Land Rover Discovery 2 not starting. For that rare occasion, please refer to this page.

Land Rover Discovery 2 Crank Sensor connected to Engine Harness.

Before you attempt to perform any repairs related to your crank sensor, make sure your Land Rover Discovery’s battery is fully charged and in excellent condition. When your engine does not start, your battery does not have the alternator (generator) for recharging. This will lead to a weak battery in about 15 minutes. Connect a battery charger to protect your battery from multiple starting attempts.

Now you’re ready to check your Land Rover for spark, but how do you do that? This is where Land Rover service experience comes into play. I do not recommend the average Land Rover owner to attempt this diagnosis. First, remove a spark plug wire from any spark plug and I would go for cylinder #2. This is the easier spark plug wire to access for removal. Second, disconnect the wire from the spark plug and have a friend try to start the engine. You should hear a sparking sound and sometimes can see the spark from the loose wire. If you have spark, then your crank sensor is good. If spark is NOT present, I am willing to bet your crank sensor is to blame. This is some advance automotive diagnosis and should be perform by someone with technical skills and equipment.

Here you can see where your crank sensor connects. This connector is difficult to find and reach in your car. I would recommend installation from underneath your Discovery. This is not easy without a vehicle lift but is the most efficient way I have found. If you do find a spark and the vehicle battery is good, you may want to move on to checking fuel pressure and engine compression. Your Land Rover will display a few of these messages without turning on the yellow Suspension Warning Lamp. These messages are purely status related information; i.e.- “Suspension Speed Too High To Change Height”. This message will display while driving in “Standard Height” and requesting “Off-road Height”. Your Land Rover will not allow this height change over 30mph. Within the Land Rover Owner’s Manual (see message images above), you can see this message, the meaning and what to do. The “What to Do?” box states “Reduce vehicle speed”.

Now read over these dozen messages with the “Message” boxes. A few of these messages mean serious component failure. Range Rover Air Spring Replacement

Late model year Range Rover Air Suspension Systems have come along way from the early 1990’s Range Rover Classics Air Suspension Systems. Late model year Range Rover Air Suspension Systems use less components to support the chassis and in turn are more reliable. However, the Range Rover Air Spring is basically a rubber bladder with a few rubber o-rings made to support the weight our of Range Rovers. Rubber wears out! Even when you don’t drive your Range Rover, the rubber is slowly wearing out. This is especially true in dry climate with high temperatures like San Diego. The rubber will slow dry out and crack. These cracks lead to pressure leaks and failure of your Range Rover Air Spring. Luckily for us, Land Rover has released rebuilt kits for Front Air Springs on Range Rover model years 2003 to 2012. These rebuilt kits can save you money in parts costs but require a little more labor to install.

Tips Preparing Your Land Rover for the Raining Season

San Diego County doesn’t get much rain, but El Nino promises to drench us this Fall and Winter to make up for a dry year. Roads in a dry climate are much more dangerous when it finally does rain due to the build up of oils on the road that aren’t regularly washed away throughout the year. In order to keep your car and passengers safe, remember these handy tips to be prepared.

Replace wiper blades well before the rain comes to keep peak visibility.

Check tire pressure and tread to make sure you maintain grip while driving on wet roads or navigating around hazards. Premature wear can also be an indicator of worn suspension components and steering components.

Have your brakes inspected at every oil change to make sure your brakes are in great working order. Land Rovers typically need new brake pads every 40,000 miles depending on driving style.

Don’t put off preventative maintenance. Standing by the side of the road in the rain is not only a real drag but can be very dangerous in rainy weather.

Winter weather temperatures are mild in San Diego but windshield defrost only works when your air conditioning is working properly.
